Diverse and Meaningful Activities

Work-Ordered Day

Members and staff work side by side as colleagues to perform the work that is important to their community, such as food preparation, clerical work, food service, building maintenance and clean up, budget management, administration,  wellness facility management, and mental health advocacy

Employment Program

We assist members with their employment goals wherever they are in their recovery. We help members achieve full-time employment, part-time employment, or transitional employment, depending upon the member’s needs.

Education Program

In addition to tutoring and other in-house support, we help people obtain educational opportunities. From adult basic education through graduate school, we assist members to pursue their educational goals.

Social and Recreational Activities

Our Clubhouse also provides social and recreational programming. Members and staff together organize structured and non-structured social activities, located both at the Clubhouse and in the community.

Proven Results

Research demonstrates that Clubhouses have a meaningful impact on members’ lives.

BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

Compared to an outpatient clinic, Clubhouses led to significantly better quality of life after six months.

REDUCED SYMPTOMS

An 18-month longitudinal study showed Clubhouse members reported decreased psychiatric symptoms over time, particularly anxiety. Clubhouse members showed significantly less withdrawal, isolation, and loss of motivation and had significantly lower scores of psychopathology over six months.

IMPROVED EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES

Compared to a control group receiving conventional treatment, Clubhouse members had a higher rate of employment after six months of attendance. Clubhouse members worked significantly more days and more hours after 24 months of attendance. Compared to a program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT), Clubhouse members remained employed for nearly twice as long (22 weeks compared to 13 weeks).

REDUCED HOSPITALIZATIONS

Clubhouse members were less likely to be hospitalized for mental health reasons after two years of enrollment. o The longer Clubhouse members were enrolled, the less likely they were to be psychiatrically hospitalized.

IMPROVED PHYSICAL HEALTH

Clubhouses have an impact on physical health over time. After 18 months of Clubhouse membership, Clubhouse members reported improved sleep quality, increased physical energy, and decreased tobacco use.

REDUCED HEALTHCARE COSTS

Clubhouse members had significantly lower average annual total mental health care costs compared to non-members with mental illness of similar age, race, and gender. The cost of Clubhouses is estimated to be one-third of the cost of the IPS model; about half the annual costs of Community Mental Health Centers; and substantially less than the ACT model.

REDUCED INCARCERATIONS

Clubhouse members’ criminal justice system involvement was substantially diminished during and after Clubhouse membership.

REDUCED STIGMA

Clubhouse members reported significantly less stigma and discrimination than participants in a psychiatric rehabilitation skills training over three months.

IMRPOVED BELIEF IN ONESELF

Competitively employed Clubhouse members showed an increase in self-esteem over time. Clubhouse members’ self-determination scores improved significantly when compared to control group members over six months. Over an 18-month period, Clubhouse members reported improved confidence in their ability to complete projects, face daily tasks, and establish social relationships.
